New Student Tips

  1. Yoga develops strength, flexibility and balance.  Vinyasa yoga adds a cardiovascular element.
  2. The main benefits of yoga:
    - Connects your mind, body and spirit
    - Lowers blood pressure
    - Detoxifies your system
    - Helps find you find balance in life
    - Calms your mind and eases stress
  3. Give yourself at least 10 classes to begin to get comfortable with yoga. Like any new physical activity, it’s normal to feel a little sore as you are using your muscles in a different way. You get stronger with every practice.
  4. Bring a mat, towel and water to class.  There are differences in mats. For less than the cost of a pair of running shoes you can invest in a quality mat that will last many years. Towels help put a hygienic layer underneath you, can be used to cover your eyes in savasana and add traction during postures. Sip water during class instead of gulping. It’s also important to drink water before you ever get to the studio.
  5. Arrive 10-15 minutes early if possible to get comfortable.  Please practice good hygiene and avoid wearing scents and fragrances.
  6. The studio is kept at between 87oF to 92oF.  Heat helps the detoxification process and helps warm up your muscles for your safety.
  7. If you have long hair, pigtails or headbands work better than ponytails. During some of the practice you will be lying on your back and a ponytail can cause your head to turn to one side.
  8. Wear clothing that is comfortable and moves freely.  Avoid cotton as it clings to you when you sweat. More fitted clothing allows your teacher to see your body alignment as you move.
  9. If you get tired, take child’s pose. This can be done any time during your practice and is a sign of strength.
  10. Grab a block and strap when you come into the studio.  It’s helpful to keep the blocks close to the front of your mat.
  11. Come with a willingness to try things.
  12. Always take care of yourself first. You know your body best.
